Hope Builders is a documentary about a new teaching method (Action Research) aimed at preparing children to take up environmental challenges. Focused on an unusual grade 6 classroom where students learn to identify, analyze and resolve problems existing in the world around them, this Fernand Dansereau film highlights both the uncertainty faced by those who want to change things, and the necessity to find reasons to hope.



A WWII film about children evaculated from Britain and sent to Canada for their safety. The film begins in England with children seeking shelter as anti-aircraft guns roar outside. On their arrival in Canada, they are thrilled by the brightly lit cities, powerful Canadian trains, hot dogs and ice cream. They find, too, that instead of becoming Mounties or cowboys, they have to go to school. The closing sequence shows them learning to ski and skate and preparing for Christmas in their new homes.

A variation on a fable by Aesop (The Lion and the Mouse) in which a mouse aids a mighty lion, who’d once spared his life, to escape, this film casts real animals – with a big brown bear in the role of the lion. This children’s film proves that little friends can prove great friends indeed.



This short film is part of a series entitled I Can Make Art and focuses on the work of Emily Carr. In this film, kids examine Carr's unusual world and the inspiration for her haunting landscapes. Drawing on this inspiration, they then attempt to create a giant forest mural on a window in their school. The series is comprised of six short films that take a kid's-eye view of a diverse group of Canadian visual artists.



Filmed at the Wing Fong Farm in Ontario, this documentary follows the tilling, planting and harvesting of Asian vegetables destined for Chinese markets and restaurants. On 80 acres of land, Lau King-Fai, her son and a half-dozen migrant Mexican workers care for the plants. For Yeung Kwan, her son, the farm represents personal and financial independence. For his mother, it is an oasis of peace. For the Mexican workers, it provides jobs that help support their children back home.
